The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed 44-year-old MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new president of its Tripura state unit for a term of three years. Debroy, a pharmacy graduate, was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Matabari constituency in Gomati district in 2023.
Succession and Leadership Change
Debroy succeeds Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, whose term ended early last year. Bhattacharjee had continued in the role as the party faced challenges in identifying a suitable successor. Party insiders revealed that internal factionalism within the state BJP delayed the appointment process.
Selection Process and Contenders
Initially, the central leadership had asked the Chief Minister to propose candidates for the position. In response, names like social welfare minister Tinku Roy, and incumbent vice presidents Tapas Bhattacharjee and Subal Bhowmik were suggested. However, a rival faction opposed these choices and proposed alternative names such as former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, former Union minister Pratima Bhowmik, and general secretaries MLA Bhagaban Das and Amit Raskit. These suggestions were reportedly rejected by the party’s high command, leading to a prolonged deadlock.
Role of National Leadership
When Nitin Nabin took over as BJP chief, he emphasized placing younger leaders in key positions. Following his directive, the Chief Minister was once again asked to recommend a dynamic and organizationally capable candidate for the role. Subsequently, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha put forward Abhishek Debroy's name for consideration. Debroy’s appointment, which will likely extend through the February 2028 assembly elections, was finalized after CM Manik Saha met with BJP chief Nitin Nabin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday. His selection was formally announced by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, with immediate effect.
Debroy's Vision
Speaking about his new role, Debroy expressed his commitment to strengthening the party’s grassroots organization, fostering unity among members, and working closely with senior leaders to achieve their collective goals. He emphasized the importance of building a robust organizational structure and ensuring effective communication between the state and central leadership.
