Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin has dispatched specially curated boxes of premium Indian mangoes to diplomats representing 82 countries posted in New Delhi. The initiative, dubbed 'mango diplomacy,' aims to highlight India's rich horticultural heritage and the global appeal of its summer fruit.
Four GI-tagged mango varieties showcased
The hampers featured four of India's most celebrated mango varieties, each known for its distinct taste, aroma, and regional identity. These include Gir Kesar from Gujarat, Banganapalle from Andhra Pradesh, and Dussehri and Benarasi Langra from Uttar Pradesh. All four varieties have received Geographical Indication (GI) tags, underscoring their unique qualities and origin.
Gir Kesar, cultivated in Gujarat's Girnar region, is prized for its saffron-coloured pulp, sweetness, and strong aroma. It was granted a GI tag in 2011. Banganapalle, grown in Andhra Pradesh, is noted for its large size, golden-yellow skin, and firm, fibreless flesh, receiving GI recognition in 2017. Dussehri, originating from Malihabad in Uttar Pradesh, is characterised by its thin skin, fibreless texture, and rich sweet taste; it was accorded GI status in 2009. Benarasi Langra, associated with Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, remains green even when ripe and is known for its sweet-tangy flavour and strong aroma, earning a GI tag in 2023.
Personal note underscores cultural significance
Along with the mangoes, Nabin included a personal note conveying greetings and underlining the cultural significance of the fruit. He described the mango as a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and India's agricultural legacy. The initiative was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks on the importance of mangoes during an episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
Vijay Chauthaiwale, who heads the BJP's Foreign Affairs Department, shared details of the outreach programme on social media platform X. He stated that the effort was designed to strengthen diplomatic ties through the universal appeal of mangoes, which India produces in abundance. India is among the world's largest producers of mangoes, widely appreciated domestically and internationally for their flavour and quality.
Mango diplomacy as a soft power tool
The mango hamper initiative is part of a broader strategy to use India's agricultural products as instruments of soft power. By offering GI-tagged mangoes, the BJP aims to promote awareness of India's diverse horticultural heritage and the economic value of its regional produce. The gesture also serves to reinforce cultural connections with diplomatic missions in the capital.
According to Chauthaiwale, the response from the diplomatic community has been positive, with many diplomats expressing appreciation for the thoughtful gift. The initiative aligns with the government's focus on promoting Indian products globally under the 'Make in India' and 'One District One Product' schemes.
