The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fierce verbal assault on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of becoming a "law unto herself" and showing blatant disrespect towards the office of the President of India. The political firestorm erupted after Banerjee alleged that the BJP was exploiting President Droupadi Murmu for political gains during a recent Santhal tribal conference in West Bengal.
BJP Leader Ravi Shankar Prasad Denounces Allegations as 'Shameful Nonsense'
Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad vehemently rejected the Chief Minister's accusations, labeling them as "shameful and nonsense." He emphasized that President Murmu's attendance at the Santhal conference was entirely non-political and rooted in cultural and tribal engagement. "There is absolutely nothing political about the President honoring a tribal community event. To suggest otherwise is an insult to the highest constitutional office," Prasad stated categorically.
Prasad further speculated that Mamata Banerjee's outburst stems from a "guilty conscience" and growing anxiety. He claimed the Chief Minister now fears backlash from the Santhal community over the perceived poor treatment of the President and the alleged mismanagement of the tribal event's organization. "Her allegations are a desperate attempt to deflect from her own administrative failures and the discontent brewing among tribal populations in West Bengal," he asserted.
Accusations of Constitutional Disrespect and Policy Failures
The BJP leader did not mince words, directly challenging Banerjee's frequent proclamations about safeguarding the Constitution. "If Mamata Banerjee cannot respect the President of the country, she should stop lecturing others about saving the Constitution," Prasad declared, framing the issue as a fundamental breach of constitutional decorum.
Escalating the attack, Prasad made a controversial insinuation about the Trinamool Congress government's policies, contrasting the treatment of the President with that of alleged illegal immigrants. "Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, only 'ghuspaithiye' (infiltrators) are welcomed. Doors are wide open for them, while respect for constitutional authorities is sidelined," he alleged, linking the controversy to broader national security and governance debates.
