The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, labeling him a 'hypocrite' over the issue of Other Backward Classes (OBC) representation within his party. The remarks came amid a leadership change in Karnataka, where the Congress recently replaced Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with a new face.
BJP's Allegations
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla targeted Gandhi, stating that several prominent Congress leaders heading state units or governments do not belong to the OBC community. 'Rahul Gandhi talks about social justice but his own party fails to reflect it. In Karnataka, the new chief minister is not from the OBC community, and many state Congress presidents across India are also not OBCs. This exposes the Congress's double standards,' Poonawalla said.
Context of the Attack
The BJP's criticism comes as the Congress grapples with internal dynamics in Karnataka, where the party leadership changed after Siddaramaiah's tenure. The new chief minister, who took office earlier this week, is reportedly from a different caste group, prompting the BJP to question the Congress's commitment to OBC empowerment. Poonawalla further alleged that Rahul Gandhi's public posturing on caste equity is at odds with the party's actual decisions.
Congress's Response
The Congress party has not yet officially responded to the BJP's allegations. However, party insiders have dismissed the charges as politically motivated, pointing to the Congress's historical support for OBC reservations and social justice measures. They argue that leadership choices are based on merit and electoral viability, not solely on caste considerations.
The controversy highlights the ongoing political battle between the BJP and Congress over caste representation, a key issue in Indian politics. With elections approaching in several states, both parties are keen to consolidate their OBC vote banks.
