BJP Condemns Sonia Gandhi's Remarks on Iran, Accuses Her of Misrepresenting Diplomacy

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday strongly criticized Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for her denunciation of the Indian government's response to the assassination of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a recent US-Israeli attack. The party emphasized that diplomacy should not be reduced to mere appeasement or performative politics, while recalling Khamenei's historical support for secessionist forces in Kashmir.

BJP Cites Khamenei's Controversial Statements on Kashmir

Vijay Chauthaiwale, head of the BJP's foreign department, pointed to several statements made by Ayatollah Khamenei that were critical of India. He urged Sonia Gandhi to "brush up" her memory, referencing a 2017 statement where the Iranian leader called for the Muslim world to openly support the people of Kashmir, alongside Yemen and Bahrain, and to repudiate oppressors attacking them.

"India has not been silent in this crisis," Chauthaiwale asserted. "Our nation has consistently advocated for restraint, respect for sovereignty, and de-escalation in the region. With millions of Indian citizens residing and working across the Gulf, along with vital economic and energy ties, reckless commentary is neither practical nor responsible."

BJP Defends Government's Diplomatic Stance

Amit Malviya, a prominent BJP spokesperson, labeled Sonia Gandhi's article as misleading, arguing that it portrays India's response as "silence" and reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of responsible diplomacy. He contrasted the current government's approach with past actions under the Congress-led UPA regime.

Malviya highlighted that when Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed in 2011, the UPA government neither issued a formal condolence nor mounted any condemnation. "This raises a critical question: was the UPA wrong in 2011, or is the Modi government right today? One cannot maintain two separate foreign policies—one while in opposition and another while in power," he stated emphatically.

Context of Regional Tensions and India's Position

The BJP's remarks come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, following reports of Iran launching a massive missile strike at a US airbase in Bahrain and Israel bombing Beirut. Satellite images have shown the aftermath of attacks on Iranian sites, including Khamenei's compound and nuclear facilities, while the US operation "Epic Fury" has reportedly incurred costs of $700 million in just 24 hours, with final war expenses remaining uncertain.

In this volatile scenario, the BJP reiterated India's commitment to a balanced and pragmatic foreign policy, prioritizing national interests and regional stability over partisan rhetoric. The party's response underscores ongoing political debates over India's diplomatic strategies in handling international conflicts and relations with global powers.
