NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dharmeswar Konwar emerged victorious in the Sonari assembly constituency, securing a total of 74,833 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Utpal Gogoi by a decisive margin of 24,134 votes in the 2026 Assam assembly elections.

Voter Statistics

The Sonari constituency had 1,71,855 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 election. Among them, 84,602 were male, 87,252 were female, and one voter belonged to the third gender. The constituency is a general (unreserved) seat located in the Charaideo district of Assam and is one of the 10 assembly segments under the Jorhat parliamentary constituency.

Previous Election Results

In the 2021 Assam assembly elections, Sonari had 1,78,790 registered voters, with 1,45,189 valid votes cast. BJP candidate Dharmeswar Konwar won the seat with 69,690 votes, defeating Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Suri, who finished second with 54,573 votes. The victory margin was 15,117 votes. In the 2016 assembly elections, Sonari had 1,51,738 electors, with 1,31,346 valid votes recorded. BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi won the seat with 73,327 votes, defeating Congress candidate Sarat Barkataky, who secured 49,210 votes. The margin of victory was 24,117 votes.

Exit polls released on Wednesday evening for the high-stakes Assam battle indicate a clear majority for the incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.
