The Bharatiya Janata Party's strong performance in the West Bengal assembly elections will provide it an advantage in the Rajya Sabha only after the next parliamentary polls, as the earliest vacancies from the state are expected in August 2029. This delay means that the immediate impact of the Bengal results on the Upper House composition will be limited.
Impact in Tamil Nadu
Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, the effects of the state assembly elections will be felt two years from now. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor Vijay, is set to make its debut in the Rajya Sabha in June 2028. It is expected to send at least three members to the Upper House, reducing the representation of the DMK, Congress, and AIADMK by one seat each.
BJP's Growing Legislative Footprint
The BJP's overall strength in state assemblies has increased significantly, rising from 773 MLAs in September 2013 to 1,798 in May 2026. This growth will continue to enhance the party's legislative footprint in the Rajya Sabha. If the BJP maintains its winning streak in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat next year, the National Democratic Alliance could achieve a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha.
Congress's Declining Influence
On the other hand, the Congress party's repeated losses in state elections are steadily reducing its strength in the Rajya Sabha. Currently, Congress holds 29 seats in the Upper House, compared to the BJP's 113. This trend is expected to continue as the party struggles to regain its footing.
Kerala and Puducherry Scenarios
In Kerala, the results will dent the Left parties' representation in the Rajya Sabha next year. However, this will not significantly affect the overall numbers of the INDIA bloc, as the Left's loss will only add to Congress's tally. In Puducherry, the All India NR Congress-led NDA victory will help the alliance retain the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the Union territory when a vacancy arises in October next year.
Assam's Limited Impact
Assam's election results will not substantially alter the Rajya Sabha arithmetic, as the BJP is expected to hold its ground with a repeat victory in the state.
These developments come as the latest election results from Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry are being tracked closely. The outcomes will shape the political landscape in the coming years, particularly in the Rajya Sabha.
