A tragic accident occurred on the Ganga Expressway early Monday morning when a sleeper bus overturned after a tyre burst, resulting in one fatality and injuries to over 30 passengers, according to police reports.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place near Sarai Piparia village in the Musajhaag area at approximately 12:30 am. The bus was en route from Khaga in Fatehpur district to Ludhiana. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ankita Sharma stated that the bus's tyre burst suddenly near the 202-km mark on the expressway. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn three to four times before crossing the divider and landing on the opposite lane.
The deceased passenger has been identified as Anuj (34), a resident of Fatehpur district, who died at the scene. More than 30 passengers sustained injuries, with six in critical condition. These critically injured individuals have been referred to Bareilly for advanced medical treatment.
Rescue Operations
Police teams from Musajhaag, Dataganj, and nearby police stations, along with health department staff and ambulance services, rushed to the site upon receiving information about the accident. Rescuers broke open the bus windows and cut through seats to extricate passengers trapped inside the mangled vehicle. Officials noted that it was fortunate the bus did not fall into a deep ditch alongside the expressway, which could have resulted in more casualties.
The injured passengers were initially taken to nearby community health centres and the district hospital for treatment. Around 24 passengers sustained minor injuries, while six were critically injured and admitted to the district hospital. Some of the critically injured were later referred to Bareilly for advanced care.
Administrative Response
District Magistrate Avneesh Rai confirmed that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring proper medical assistance to the injured. He stated that a few passengers with minor injuries have been discharged after treatment, while six remain admitted to the district hospital. Some have been referred to Bareilly due to the severity of their injuries.
Preliminary findings suggest that overspeeding and the tyre burst were the likely causes of the accident. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
