Chennai Witnesses Tense Protest at US Consulate Over Iran Conflict, 200 Detained
Tension gripped Chennai on Sunday afternoon as members of the Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Jamath, alongside prominent political leaders, attempted to march towards and lay siege to the US Consulate located on Anna Salai. The protest was driven by demands for the United States to halt its military actions against Iran, amid escalating regional conflicts.
Protest Details and Police Response
The demonstration, which began at Royapettah Government Hospital, saw protesters marching along Peters Road to New College, vocally raising slogans against the US and Israel. In response, police authorities detained approximately 200 individuals, housing them in community halls to maintain public order. Traffic in the vicinity, particularly from Royapettah hospital along Peters Road, was temporarily suspended to manage the situation.
Security was significantly bolstered, with over 250 police personnel deployed around the US Consulate in anticipation of the protest. This move aimed to prevent any potential disruptions or clashes, ensuring the safety of both protesters and consulate staff.
Political Leaders Voice Concerns
Addressing the media during the march, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan highlighted the plight of Tamils working in the Gulf region, urging India not to remain silent on the issue. He criticized the US and Israel, accusing them of paving the way for a global conflict through their actions.
Later, at the protest gathering, Thirumavalavan announced plans for statewide demonstrations on March 3 in Chennai and other major Tamil Nadu cities. These events, organized by the CPI, CPM, and VCK, are intended to condemn US military activities. Other notable participants included Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilaignar Peravai leader Thaniyarasu, Mukkulathor Pulipadai party leader Karunas, and Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi leader Tamimun Ansari.
Broader Context and Implications
The protest was organized to condemn the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and to call for an immediate end to the ongoing war. This incident reflects growing local and international concerns over the conflict's impact, particularly on diaspora communities and regional stability.
As tensions persist, such demonstrations underscore the interconnectedness of global events with local activism, prompting discussions on diplomatic responses and security measures in urban centers like Chennai.
