Goa Chief Minister Honors Maratha Legacy in Sanguem Ceremony
In a significant tribute to historical protectors of faith, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday attributed the survival of the state's dharma, culture, and temples during the Portuguese colonial period to the valiant efforts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Speaking at the unveiling of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in Sanguem, Sawant emphasized that it was solely due to these two Maratha rulers that Goa's religious and cultural heritage endured through centuries of colonial oppression.
Unveiling a Monument to Heritage Protection
The ceremony, attended by numerous religious and political leaders, marked the installation of what Sawant described as a unique statue in Goa. He highlighted that this monument would serve as an enduring reminder for generations to come, ensuring that the contributions of the Maratha rulers in safeguarding the state's heritage are never forgotten. "It will remind generations for the next 500 years about the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the protection of our dharma," Sawant declared passionately.
The Turning Point: Rebuilding the Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple
Delving into historical specifics, Sawant recounted the devastating impact of Portuguese rule, noting that over 1,000 temples in Goa were destroyed during that era. He pointed to a pivotal moment when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj issued an order to reconstruct the Shree Saptakoteshwar temple at Narve. According to the Chief Minister, this act proved to be a decisive turning point in Goa's history.
The reconstruction of the temple not only halted the wave of temple destruction but also put an end to forced religious conversions, thereby securing the protection of Goa's dharma, temples, and 'sanskriti' (culture).Sawant's remarks underscored the profound legacy of the Maratha rulers, whose interventions are credited with preserving the spiritual and cultural fabric of the region. By commemorating their role through this statue, the state aims to foster a deeper appreciation for historical resilience and the enduring values of heritage conservation.
