The Congress party has accused the Uttar Pradesh police of placing its leaders, including state unit chief Ajay Rai, under house arrest to prevent a planned visit to the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The allegation comes amid an ongoing controversy over the embezzlement of funds at the temple, with eight accused already sent to judicial custody.
Congress Delegation Blocked
According to Congress leaders, a delegation scheduled to visit the Ram temple on Thursday was stopped by police at their residences. Ajay Rai and other party members were reportedly detained or confined to their homes, effectively blocking the visit. The party claims this was a deliberate move by the BJP-led state government to suppress dissent and restrict access to the temple.
Alleged Political Interference
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "The UP government is using police to impose house arrest on our leaders. This is clear authoritarianism and an attempt to prevent devotees from visiting the temple." The party argues that the actions violate constitutional rights, as Lord Ram is a national symbol and not the property of any political party.
Donation Controversy Escalates
The visit was scheduled against the backdrop of a donation controversy at the Ram temple. Earlier this week, eight individuals were sent to judicial custody for alleged embezzlement of funds collected for the temple's construction. Congress leaders had planned to visit the site to raise questions about the financial irregularities, but were prevented from doing so.
Constitutional Concerns Raised
The Congress party has raised constitutional concerns, stating that preventing devotees from visiting Ayodhya violates fundamental rights. "The Ram temple is a symbol of faith for millions. No government has the right to block access to it for political reasons," Surjewala added. The party has demanded an explanation from the UP government and warned of further protests.
