The Indian National Congress has achieved a decisive victory in the Jaleshwar Assembly constituency in Assam, with candidate Aftab Uddin Mollah winning by a massive margin of 1,09,688 votes. According to the Election Results 2026, Mollah secured 1,62,174 votes, defeating Sheikh Shah Alam of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), who received 52,486 votes. Asom Gana Parishad candidate Abu Sha Shadi Hossain finished a distant third with 12,954 votes, while other candidates trailed significantly.
Significant Shift in Voter Preference
Jaleshwar, a general constituency in Goalpara district and part of the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, witnessed a decisive shift in voter preference. This result marks a significant turnaround from 2016, when the seat was won by AIUDF, highlighting the Congress's strong resurgence in the constituency.
Record Voter Turnout
The election also saw exceptionally high voter participation. Turnout in Jaleshwar reached 95.33 percent, a sharp increase from 81.8 percent in 2021, reflecting strong public engagement. Statewide, Assam recorded a historic turnout of 85.9 percent, the highest since 1951, despite polling being held in challenging conditions.
Women Voters Play Key Role
Women voters played a key role in this election, with participation at 86.5 percent, surpassing male turnout of 85.3 percent. The surge in turnout across demographics contributed to the scale of the Congress victory in Jaleshwar.
