Abhijit Majumdar, who stepped down as the chief of the Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC), has accused the party of losing its vision and transforming into a sectarian organization that prioritizes Muslim vote banks over representing all communities. Majumdar submitted his resignation to TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday, highlighting his two-decade-long association with the party in Assam and his role as one of its founding members in the state.
Allegations of Sectarianism and Vote Bank Politics
Majumdar expressed his disappointment, stating, "I was with the TMC in Assam since the very beginning, over twenty years. I was one of the founding members. I helped TMC grow in Assam. But today, I must say the party has lost its vision. What I see now is a sectarian outfit, chasing Muslim vote banks instead of standing for all communities." He specifically pointed to the case of Sherman Ali, who was expelled from multiple parties but joined the TMC just days before the election and won in a constituency dominated by Muslims.
Criticism of Party Structure and Regional Bias
The former TMC leader also alleged that despite claiming to be a national party, the TMC is essentially a Bengal-centric party led by Mamata Banerjee. "Even the procedures show irregularities. It is regional (party) and Assam has been sidelined. As a Hindu Bengali leader, I have worked tirelessly to protect my community, to give them a voice, but the party's decisions are now against us. My conscience tells me this is the time to step out," he stated. Majumdar further accused the TMC of becoming communal, failing to protect Hindus, and betraying the ideals on which it was built.
Resignation and Future Plans
Majumdar clarified that he resigned from the party and was not expelled, as expulsion requires prior notice. He emphasized that he established the TMC in Assam from scratch when it had no presence in the state. His resignation follows the recent step-down of TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as president of the All India Trinamool Mahila Congress, though she clarified she would remain an ordinary party worker. These developments come after the TMC's defeat in the Bengal Assembly polls last month, where the BJP formed its first government in the state.
