Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a stern warning against the black-marketing of fuel, particularly in the name of farmers, while assuring that adequate diesel supplies will be maintained for agricultural needs. The warning comes after reports emerged of a sudden 20 to 30 per cent spike in fuel sales in certain parts of the state, raising concerns about potential hoarding and illegal profiteering.
Government's Firm Stance
Speaking to the media, Fadnavis emphasized that the state government will not tolerate any form of black-marketing or unfair practices in fuel distribution. He directed authorities to conduct strict surveillance and take immediate action against those found involved in such activities. The deputy chief minister also urged citizens to report any suspicious sales or hoarding to the nearest district administration or police station.
Ensuring Diesel for Farmers
Fadnavis assured the farming community that the government has made adequate arrangements to ensure uninterrupted diesel supply for agricultural operations, especially during the ongoing sowing season. He stated that the state's fuel reserves are sufficient, and there is no need for panic buying. The administration has been instructed to prioritize fuel allocation for farm machinery and irrigation pumps.
The sudden spike in sales has been attributed to rumors of potential shortages, leading to unnecessary hoarding by some individuals. Fadnavis warned that such anti-social elements would face legal consequences, including potential imprisonment and heavy fines under the Essential Commodities Act.
Background and Context
This development comes amid global fluctuations in crude oil prices and domestic supply chain challenges. However, the Maharashtra government has maintained that it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with oil marketing companies to ensure smooth distribution. Farmers have been advised to purchase fuel only from authorized dealers and to avoid stocking more than their immediate requirements.
Fadnavis reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, which is vital for the state's economy. He also called for cooperation from all stakeholders to prevent any disruption in fuel supply and to maintain law and order.
