Dehradun: An FIR was registered at Dehradun’s Dalanwala police station against five individuals, including Uttarakhand Mahila Congress president Jyoti Rautela, for allegedly attempting self-immolation during a protest in support of nursing graduates. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the accused climbed an overhead water tank at the Parade Ground to press the government to fulfill the demands of protesting nursing graduates.
Details of the Incident
According to police, Jyoti Rautela allegedly poured petrol on herself and threatened self-immolation. Meanwhile, members of the Nursing Ekta Manch blocked the road near the water tank, causing disruption. The police took suo motu cognisance of the situation and registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Legal Charges
The FIR includes charges under BNS sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty), 223 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 226 (attempt to commit suicide), and other relevant sections. SP (city) Pramod Kumar confirmed the registration of the FIR.
Police Intervention
Administration officials managed to prevent Rautela and the four others from carrying out the act after assuring them that their demands would be forwarded to the concerned department. On Wednesday, police convinced the protesters to climb down from the water tank. However, Kumar emphasized that their actions were unlawful despite the peaceful resolution.
Investigation Underway
A probe has been launched into the matter, and the accused will be summoned for questioning soon. The police are investigating the circumstances leading to the protest and the alleged threats of self-immolation.
