The Modi government has once again raised fuel prices, drawing sharp criticism from the Congress party. Petrol and diesel prices have been increased by Rs 3 per litre, while CNG prices have gone up by Rs 2 per kilogram. The Congress party, in a post on social media, referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'Inflation Man' and accused him of targeting the public after the elections.
Congress's Long-Standing Demand
For years, the Indian National Congress had been urging the government to pass on the benefits of falling international oil prices to consumers. When global crude prices were soft or declining, the Congress demanded that domestic prices of petrol, diesel, and gas be reduced. However, the government did not act on these demands, and consumers continued to pay high prices.
Jairam Ramesh's Remarks
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh highlighted this issue in a series of tweets. He stated that despite lower international oil prices, the benefits were not passed on to Indian consumers. Now, with prices rising again, the government is being accused of ignoring public interest.
The recent price hike comes soon after the conclusion of elections, leading to allegations that the government waited until after the polls to increase fuel costs. The Congress party has vowed to continue raising the issue and holding the government accountable.
