Union Minister Nitin Gadkari voiced serious concerns on Monday about the alarming increase in man-animal conflicts across the Vidarbha region. He attributed this rise directly to the growing populations of tigers and leopards in the area.
Pride and Problem in Vidarbha's Tiger Reserves
Speaking on the Marathi talk show 'Chana-Poha with Nitinji', hosted by actor Girija Oak, the Nagpur MP highlighted the global recognition brought by reserves like Tadoba, Pench, and Umred Karhandla. He noted that Nagpur is celebrated not just as the Orange City but also as India's "Tiger capital", with these sites located within about 300 kilometres.
However, Gadkari pointed out that the success in tiger conservation has led to dangerous encounters in villages near forest fringes. He suggested practical solutions such as relocation or sterilization measures to manage the animal numbers effectively.
Nagpur's Ambitious Urban Makeover
The minister detailed a series of transformative projects for Nagpur. He announced plans for a flower garden at Telangkhedi, inspired by Vancouver, and a world-class bird park featuring international species.
To tackle traffic congestion, Gadkari proposed a rotary at Medical Square followed by an underground market similar to Delhi's models. This would involve shifting existing shops to create more open public spaces.
Infrastructure and Cultural Enhancements
Gadkari confirmed that modernization work on Nagpur airport will commence soon, promising a world-class facility. Both the main and Ajni railway stations are undergoing redevelopment into what he called "five-star stations".
He reiterated his commitment to the musical fountain project at Futala Lake, describing it as a future global attraction. The fountain features designs by French architects, music by AR Rahman, and commentary by Amitabh Bachchan and Nana Patekar in English and Marathi. A floating stage and spectator gallery for 4,500 people are already complete.
Addressing Criticism and Environmental Issues
Gadkari addressed sustained online trolling over alleged links to ethanol controversies. He defended his stance against excessive dependence on petrol and diesel, noting India imports fuel worth nearly Rs 22 lakh crore annually. He claimed false campaigns were run against him and ethanol initiatives.
Regarding the 2023 flooding downstream of Ambazari lake, Gadkari blamed encroachments along the Nag River that obstructed water flow through areas like Verma Layout and Shankar Nagar.
Future Projects and Political Vision
The minister revealed plans for a stadium with over one lakh spectator capacity, a 60-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and a sports stadium named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Gadkari credited BJP's two-decade tenure with transforming Nagpur, calling current achievements "just a trailer" and urging voters to support the party decisively. He defended cement roads as necessary for Nagpur's black cotton soil, citing a pothole-free road built in Manewada in 1997-98.
He also criticized the widespread consumption of kharra in Nagpur, estimating 15,000 to 20,000 people are involved in paan shops selling the substance. Gadkari promised to discuss flyover projects with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar after elections.
Despite criticism, Gadkari acknowledged social media's power as a tool for directly communicating infrastructure developments to people across India and abroad.
