Lt Gen Akaash Johar, AVSM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 9 Corps, served as chief guest. He was received by Col KKS Dadhwal, president of the HP State War Memorial Development Society, alongside civil administration officers. The general led the wreath-laying ceremony, joined by senior defence personnel, Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, police officials, and other dignitaries, who offered floral tributes to the martyrs.
Emotional Tribute at Memorial Museum
After touring the memorial and museum, Lt Gen Johar wrote in the visitors' book: "Indeed an honour and privilege to lay this wreath on this auspicious occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas-2026. We owe everything to our fallen heroes. Jai Hind!" His words underscored the gratitude felt by the nation toward the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.
Youth Encouraged to Join Armed Forces
Interacting with NSS volunteers of Government College, Dharamsala, and NCC cadets, Lt Gen Johar urged the youth to uphold the state's legacy of service. He encouraged aspiring candidates to prepare for the Services Selection Board (SSB) and informed them that free SSB coaching is available at Yol Cantt, making military careers more accessible. Col Dadhwal briefed the general on the war memorial's ongoing projects and expansion plans.
District Administration's Role
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa laid a wreath on behalf of the district administration. He described Kangra as 'Veer Bhoomi', noting that almost every second family in the district has a deep association with the armed forces. This connection highlights the region's significant contribution to national defence.

Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India's victory in the 85-day war of 1999, during which the Indian Army successfully evicted Pakistani intruders from strategic mountain heights in the Kargil sector.
