IAF Base Repair Depot Completes Indigenous Overhaul of MiG-29K Ejection Seat
IAF Depot Overhauls MiG-29K Ejection Seat for Navy

The Base Repair Depot (BRD) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Nashik has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing the indigenous overhaul of the first ejection seat for the Indian Navy's MiG-29K fighter aircraft. This development marks a crucial step toward self-reliance in defense maintenance.

Reducing Dependence on Russia

According to an IAF officer, the ejection seats of the MiG-29K aircraft were previously sent to Russia for overhaul. The BRD IAF has now performed the overhaul domestically, and the refurbished seat was handed over to the Indian Navy. This achievement underscores the IAF's commitment to strengthening indigenous maintenance capabilities and reducing reliance on external support.

Technical Expertise of BRD Nashik

BRD Nashik is responsible for the major overhaul of MiG-29 and Su-30 MKI aircraft and their aggregates. Over the years, the depot has developed deep technical expertise, robust repair capabilities, and specialized infrastructure to support the complex maintenance requirements of these two fleets. By leveraging extensive experience with the Su-30 MKI ejection seat, the BRD successfully formulated the overhaul technology for the MiG-29K ejection seat, which was approved by the Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (RCMA).

The overhauled ejection seat was handed over to the Indian Navy at Nashik in the presence of Air Marshal Yalla Umesh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Maintenance Command (IAF), and Vice Admiral Rahul Gokhale, Chief of Staff of Western Naval Command (Indian Navy). This event highlights the collaborative efforts between the IAF and the Indian Navy.

When asked about the possibility of manufacturing such ejection seats in India, the officer stated that, as of now, the overhauled seat has been handed over to the Indian Navy, and future decisions will be made by the respective offices.
