The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for Mumbai and several neighbouring districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the weekend. The alert is in effect for Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, with the probability of the forecast categorised as "very likely" by the weather bureau.
Red Alert for Mumbai and Surrounding Districts
According to the IMD's district-wise forecast released on Friday afternoon, Mumbai is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with isolated extremely heavy spells on July 4 and 5. The advisory also extends to the neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. Civic officials confirmed that Thane and Palghar have been placed under a red alert for the same period, while Raigad district is under a red alert for Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
The heavy downpour follows a week of relentless rains that have lashed Mumbai after the late onset of the monsoon, severely disrupting normal life. The IMD's forecast indicates that the city will continue to experience intense rainfall, with a likelihood of heavy to very heavy precipitation at isolated places on Monday, July 6, and heavy rainfall expected at a few locations on Tuesday, July 7.
Impact on Daily Life and Precautionary Measures
The persistent rains have already caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai, leading to traffic snarls and delays in local train services. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the red alert period. Authorities have also deployed pumps and rescue teams in vulnerable areas to handle potential flooding and landslides.
Fishermen along the coast have been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. The IMD has urged the public to follow safety guidelines and stay updated through official channels. The red alert signals the need for extreme caution, as extremely heavy rainfall can lead to flash floods, road closures, and damage to infrastructure.
Regional Weather Outlook
The IMD's forecast for the Mumbai region comes as part of a broader monsoon pattern affecting the west coast of India. The meteorological department has indicated that the active monsoon conditions are likely to persist over the next few days, with the possibility of further alerts if the situation worsens. Residents in the affected districts are advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities in evacuation efforts if necessary.
