NEW DELHI: Murders in India dropped by 2.4% in 2024, according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Overall, 58.8 lakh cognisable crimes were registered in the country in 2024, representing a decline of 6% compared to 2023, when 62.4 lakh cases were reported.
Crimes Against Women See Decline
Crimes against women decreased by 1.5%, with 4.41 lakh cases reported in 2024 compared to 4.48 lakh in the previous year. The crime rate per lakh women population also dropped to 64.6 from 66.2. Similarly, the overall crime rate registered per lakh population decreased from 448.3 in 2023 to 418.9 in 2024.
Offences Against the State Rise
Offences against the state witnessed a rise of 6.6%, with 5,194 cases registered in 2024 compared to 4,873 cases in 2023, the data shows. Meanwhile, cases registered by state anti-corruption bureaux stood at 4,053 in 2024, marginally down from 4,069 in 2023, a decline of 0.4%.
Economic Offences Increase
Economic offences rose by 4.6% in 2024, with 2.14 lakh cases compared to 2.04 lakh cases in 2023.
