Iran Swipes at Rubio Over Taj Mahal, Claims Iranian Architects Built It

The Iranian Consulate in Hyderabad took a swipe at US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after his visit to the Taj Mahal, claiming the iconic monument reflected the 'genius of Iranian architects' while criticising the US government's stance towards Iran. Rubio, who is on a four-day visit to India, visited the Taj Mahal in Agra with his wife Jeanette Rubio and described it as 'one of the love treasures of the world'.

Iranian Response to Rubio's Visit

Following the visit, the Iranian Consulate posted a message on X stating that the monument was built in memory of the emperor's Iranian wife and was crafted by Iranian architects. The post also accused the US administration of threatening Iranian civilisation and carried a photograph of Rubio and his wife at the monument.

Context of the Exchange

The Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who was of Persian descent. While the architects and craftsmen involved in its construction included many from Persia and other regions, the monument is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Mughal architecture in India. The Iranian Consulate's remarks highlight ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, with the post serving as a diplomatic jab during Rubio's visit to India.

Rubio's visit to India includes discussions on bilateral relations, trade, and regional security. The Taj Mahal stop was part of a cultural programme, but it inadvertently became a platform for Iran to voice its grievances against US policies. The Iranian post did not receive an official response from the US or Indian authorities at the time of reporting.
