Kerala's Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan has strongly defended the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), describing it as a 'brother party' that is vital for secularism in the state. His remarks come amid growing criticism from certain quarters within the United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance regarding the IUML's role and influence.
Satheesan's Defense of IUML
Speaking to the media in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan emphasized that the IUML has been a steadfast ally of the Congress-led UDF for decades. He stated, 'The IUML is not just an alliance partner but a brother party. Their contribution to the secular fabric of Kerala is undeniable. Without the IUML, the concept of secularism in the state would be incomplete.'
The opposition leader's comments come at a time when some UDF constituents have expressed concerns over the IUML's growing assertiveness and its stance on certain issues. Satheesan, however, dismissed these concerns, urging alliance members to focus on the larger goal of defeating the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the upcoming local body elections.
IUML's Role in Kerala Politics
The IUML, which has its roots in the pre-independence Muslim League, has been a key player in Kerala politics, particularly in the Malabar region. The party has been part of the UDF since its formation in the 1970s and has often been accused by the LDF of being a communal force. However, Satheesan's remarks highlight the Congress's continued reliance on the IUML to counter the LDF's dominance.
Satheesan also took a dig at the LDF, saying, 'Those who question the IUML's secular credentials are the ones who have compromised with communalism in the past. The UDF stands united for secularism and development.'
Alliance Dynamics
The UDF, which includes the Congress, IUML, Kerala Congress (M), and other smaller parties, has been facing internal tensions in recent months. The IUML's demand for more seats in the upcoming local body elections has been a point of contention. Satheesan's statement is seen as an attempt to pacify the IUML and reaffirm the alliance's unity.
Political analysts believe that the Congress cannot afford to alienate the IUML, given its strong influence in the Muslim-majority pockets of Kerala. The IUML's support is crucial for the UDF to challenge the LDF's stronghold in the state.
Satheesan concluded by saying, 'We are all together in this fight against the undemocratic and corrupt LDF government. The IUML is our partner, and we will continue to work together for the betterment of Kerala.'
