Leaders Pay Tribute on 27th Anniversary
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26, 2026, extended heartfelt tributes to the Indian Armed Forces on the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas. Prime Minister Modi also expressed the nation's gratitude, posting on X: "On Kargil Vijay Diwas, our nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India. Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride." He further added that the dedication of the heroes of the 1999 war would inspire future generations.
Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, commemorates the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the Indian armed forces during the Kargil War of 1999. The day marks the successful conclusion of Operation Vijay, which drove out intruders who had infiltrated Indian territory across the Line of Control. The conflict began in May 1999 when infiltrators occupied strategic posts in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to cut off National Highway 1A, the vital link between Srinagar and Leh.
India responded with Operation Vijay, a meticulously planned mission that involved over two months of fierce combat in some of the harshest terrain in the world. The operation resulted in the recapture of all occupied posts by late July, with the victory declared on July 26, 1999. The war claimed the lives of hundreds of Indian soldiers, whose sacrifice is honored on this day.
