Jill Biden Shocked by Harris Loss, Recalls Biden Debate

Former first lady Jill Biden has revealed in a new interview that she was certain Kamala Harris would win the 2024 presidential election against Donald Trump, making the eventual loss deeply shocking. Speaking to CBS News correspondent Rita Braver ahead of the release of her memoir 'Views from the East Wing,' Jill Biden recounted her surprise when the outcome defied her expectations.

Interview Highlights

When Braver expressed astonishment at Jill Biden's confidence, the former first lady elaborated, 'The excitement for her and the crowds and, I mean, how people rallied around her, and I truly felt that she was going to win. I was shocked she didn't win, because I think she would be a good president.'

Jill Biden and Kamala Harris were never known to be close friends, but Jill Biden's support for Harris was evident in her remarks.

Memoir Reveals Debate Concerns

In her memoir, set for release on June 2, Jill Biden wrote about the moment she realized something was wrong during President Joe Biden's debate against Donald Trump in June 2024. While watching from a holding room near the CNN studio, she wondered, 'Is this a stroke?' She described the experience as 'watching an AI hologram of the man we knew, and the hologram was glitching. Has he been drugged?'

Jill Biden wrote that she never discovered what caused his performance, speculating that he might have been given Ambien or codeine cough syrup for a persistent cough after flying home from Europe, leading to side effects.

'In that debate, Joe lost himself,' she wrote. 'He lost the essence of who he was. He did not speak from the heart. His opponent lied more than a hundred times, but that didn't matter.'

Joe Biden himself acknowledged the disaster. As they walked off the set, he whispered, 'I really f*cked up, didn't I?' Jill responded, 'Yes, you did.'

Notes to the President

Jill Biden also shared that she would leave inspirational or blunt notes for her husband during his presidency, including 'You are my hero' and 'Get up, champ. Get up.' She even wrote notes on foreign policy, such as 'Net has to stop' or 'Be strong, Don't let BN use your goodness,' referring to Benjamin Netanyahu.
