Kerala Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan met outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday, continuing his series of meetings with senior leaders after being named by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) as the next head of the state government.
Meeting with Pinarayi Vijayan
Satheesan called on Vijayan at the latter's official residence in the state capital. The meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes, was described as cordial by sources close to both leaders. They discussed the smooth transition of power and key issues facing the state, including the ongoing monsoon preparedness and development projects.
Consultations with Senior Leaders
Following his meeting with Vijayan, Satheesan paid visits to several senior Congress leaders in Thiruvananthapuram. He met with former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Ramesh Chennithala, and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President K Sudhakaran. These consultations are part of Satheesan's efforts to build consensus and finalize his cabinet and policy priorities before taking oath.
The AICC officially announced Satheesan's name as the Chief Ministerial candidate on Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation. Satheesan, a veteran Congress leader and currently the Leader of the Opposition, is known for his administrative acumen and grassroots connect.
Governor's Role and Swearing-In
Satheesan is also expected to meet Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan later this week to formally stake claim to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place early next week, with preparations underway at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Security arrangements and guest lists are being finalized.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections, winning 99 out of 140 seats. Satheesan's elevation is seen as a generational shift in Kerala politics, bringing a new face to the helm after Vijayan's two consecutive terms.
Reactions from Political Circles
Political parties have reacted positively to Satheesan's selection. The BJP state unit offered conditional support, while the CPI(M) expressed hope for constructive opposition. Satheesan has promised a transparent and people-centric government, focusing on job creation, healthcare, and education.
As the state prepares for a new government, all eyes are on Satheesan's first cabinet and the policies he will prioritize. The coming days will see more meetings and consultations as the CM-designate finalizes his team.
