Tragic Death of Labourer in Delhi's Rohini After Falling Into Open Sewer
In a distressing incident, a 30-year-old labourer lost his life after allegedly falling into an open sewer manhole in the Begumpur area of Rohini, Delhi. Despite a swift rescue operation initiated by the police and fire department, the man could not be saved, with the tragic event unfolding on Tuesday.
Details of the Incident Near Mahashakti Kali Temple
The accident occurred on a vacant plot near the Mahashakti Kali Temple in Sector 32, Rohini. Police have identified the victim as Birju Kumar, a resident of Samastipur in Bihar, who was employed as a labourer at an under-construction building in the vicinity.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Fatal Fall
According to police reports, a PCR call was received at the Begumpur police station around 2:36 PM, alerting authorities that a man was missing and suspected to have fallen into an open sewer. Upon arrival, police teams learned that Birju and his friend, Budhan Das, had been consuming alcohol and were walking towards their jhuggi on Monday evening when the incident took place. The plot of land is owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
Police officer stated: "Birju's friend informed us that both of them were in an inebriated state around 7:30 PM. He mentioned that Birju suddenly lost balance and fell into the open manhole. The friend initially lost consciousness due to intoxication and later realized that Birju had fallen into the drain."
The next morning, Budhan Das alerted another friend, Amir Hussain, about the incident. Police investigations revealed that the manhole was approximately 14 feet deep and about two feet in diameter, posing a significant hazard.
Rescue Efforts and Unsuccessful Outcome
An ambulance and water extraction equipment were promptly dispatched to the site after DDA and other agencies were notified. Rescue personnel launched an intensive search operation, eventually recovering Birju from the pit. The Delhi Fire Services received a call regarding the incident around 7:45 PM, after which they extracted the man in an unconscious state.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The rescue efforts, though timely, proved futile in saving his life.
Post-Incident Measures and Agency Response
Following the tragic incident, DDA officials took immediate action by covering the open manhole to prevent further accidents. However, there was no official comment from the agency at the time of reporting, leaving questions unanswered about the maintenance and safety protocols in the area.
This incident highlights the critical need for improved infrastructure safety and vigilance in urban areas to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
