Massive Shia Protests Erupt in Lucknow Over Iran Leader's Death
Thousands of Shia Muslims took to the streets of Lucknow on Sunday, expressing profound anger and grief following the killing of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an alleged attack attributed to Israel and the United States. The city witnessed large-scale demonstrations as prominent Islamic clerics reacted strongly to what they described as a major tragedy for the Islamic world.
Shia Clerics Announce Mourning and Condemnation
Renowned Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad characterized Khamenei's death as a devastating loss for Muslims globally. He clarified that the Iranian leader was engaged in routine office meetings when the attack occurred, dismissing claims that he had been hiding in bunkers. "We want to tell the world that although Khamenei has departed from this world, his mission is alive, and we will carry forward his mission and continue to raise our voices against oppression and support the oppressed," Jawwad declared emphatically.
Jawwad has officially announced a three-day mourning period, with a condolence gathering scheduled at Chhota Imambara at 8 pm, followed by a symbolic candle march. He has called for participation from people of all religious backgrounds and requested local businesses to close as a mark of respect.
Planned Protests and Symbolic Actions
Maulana Yasoob Abbas, the general secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, revealed that effigies of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be burned during protests on Monday. The Shia community has declared comprehensive mourning measures, including wearing black attire, hoisting black flags at residences, and organizing special prayer sessions throughout the three-day period.
Strong Condemnation from Islamic Leaders
Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, chairman of the Islamic Centre of India and Shahi Imam of Lucknow, condemned the attack in unequivocal terms. He asserted that the military action violated established international law and emphasized Iran's status as an independent, sovereign nation. Farangi Mahali expressed particular concern about civilian casualties, alleging that schools and other civilian areas were affected, resulting in the tragic deaths of innocent children.
Referring specifically to Khamenei's killing, Farangi Mahali called for immediate international intervention to halt the escalating conflict, especially noting the sensitive timing during the holy month of Ramadan. He urged global leaders to vocally oppose the attack and demanded that those responsible be brought before international courts for prosecution. Simultaneously, he appealed to Muslims to maintain peace and communal harmony during this volatile period.
Women's Organization Joins Condemnation
The All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) has separately condemned the ongoing US-Israel military action against Iran, labeling it a clear violation of international law. The organization stated that the conflict has caused widespread devastation across the region, with women and children suffering disproportionately. AIDWA described the attack on an Iranian primary school as "inhuman" and expressed serious concern about civilian safety, including that of Indian workers in the affected areas.
The group has urged the Indian government to take a firm diplomatic stand and press for an immediate cessation of hostilities. AIDWA leaders have expressed solidarity with the Iranian people during this difficult time, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
