Maharashtra govt cancels Hindi exam for officers after protests
Maharashtra govt cancels Hindi exam for officers

The Maharashtra government has decided to cancel the Hindi language examination for government officers and employees that was scheduled to be held on June 28, following widespread opposition from political parties and language advocacy groups, Marathi language minister Uday Samant announced on Wednesday.

Reason for Cancellation

The decision came after protests from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Shiv Sena (UBT), and Marathi language activists, who questioned the necessity of conducting such an examination in a state where Marathi is the official language. Critics argued that making Hindi proficiency a part of service conditions was unwarranted and undermined the importance of Marathi. Some political leaders had also warned of protests at examination centres, prompting the government to reconsider its stance.

Government's Review

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting of the Shiv Sena's Nashik unit, Samant stated, "The government will assess whether the examination is necessary and review the existing provisions." The state language department had earlier announced the exam for gazetted officers under rules dating back to 1976. The government will now evaluate the requirement and potential amendments to the rules.

Political Context

Meanwhile, Samant also addressed the upcoming Nashik Zilla Parishad elections, confirming that the Shiv Sena will contest as part of the Mahayuti alliance. He expressed confidence that the party would retain control of the zilla parishad. "Coordination committees have been formed and meetings are being held at division, taluka, and group levels to strengthen the organisation and fill key posts," he said.

Samant reiterated that the party will not go solo but will pursue expansion while remaining aligned with its allies. Dismissing reports of internal differences, he asserted that there is no factionalism within the party or the Mahayuti and warned of action against those attempting to create divisions.
