Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte Succumbs to Injuries After Prolonged Treatment

Vungzagin Valte, a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Manipur's Thanlon constituency, has died at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon on Saturday afternoon. The 61-year-old politician passed away at 2:19 PM after an extensive medical battle following a brutal mob assault in Imphal on May 4, 2023.

First Elected Representative Fatality in Communal Violence

Valte is reported to be the first elected representative to lose his life in the communal violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023. He is survived by his wife Lalneihmawi, two sons, one daughter, and eight grandchildren.

The three-time MLA from Thanlon had remained in critical condition since the attack, undergoing months of intensive care and multiple major surgeries. His treatment included extended care at Apollo Hospital in Delhi for approximately one-and-a-half years before he returned to Churachandpur.

Final Medical Crisis and Hospitalization

On February 7, Valte's health suddenly deteriorated due to pulmonary edema. He was immediately rushed to the district hospital and, following medical advice, was air-lifted to Delhi the next day via an air ambulance from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal.

He was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, where he received roughly 13 days of intensive treatment before passing away. Throughout his recovery, Valte's condition had been precarious, leaving him wheelchair-bound after suffering a severe head injury during the attack.

The Fateful Attack and Its Aftermath

On May 4, 2023, while returning from a meeting with then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Imphal, Valte's convoy was ambushed by a mob. The assault resulted in life-altering injuries for the MLA, while his driver, Thangjoulal, died two days later at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

During his recovery period, Valte's public statements reflected the complex ethnic tensions in Manipur, alternating between calls for a united Manipur and demands for greater autonomy for the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar people.

A Prominent Kuki-Zo Leader's Political Journey

Vungzagin Valte was a prominent Kuki-Zo leader known for advocating hill-district tribal interests in Manipur. He first entered the state assembly as a Congress member before switching to the BJP and winning the 2022 election with 4,863 votes, securing a margin of 751 votes over his nearest rival.

In 2020, he was inducted as cabinet minister for tribal affairs & hills, General Administration Department (GAD), and transport in BJP's first government in Manipur led by Biren Singh.

Request for Final Journey Through Mizoram

The village authorities of Mualnuam, Valte's birthplace, along with BJP 56 Thanlon Assembly Kendra, have requested state BJP leaders to transport his body via Mizoram. This arrangement would allow people in his constituency to pay their last respects before the final rites.

This plea was made necessary because communication between hill and valley districts remains disrupted at present, highlighting the ongoing challenges in the region.

From Humble Beginnings to Political Leadership

Born on April 3, 1964, in Mualnuam village in Manipur's Churachandpur district, Valte overcame poverty to earn a BA degree. He began his career as a research investigator in the state planning department before transitioning to the banking sector.

He served over two decades in United Bank of India and State Bank of India, where he won multiple national awards, including the coveted SBI Chairman's Club membership. In 2021, he resigned as chief manager to dedicate himself fully to public service.

Political Career and Legislative Achievements

Valte's political career began in 2012 when he was elected MLA from Thanlon. He was re-elected in 2017 and 2022 on a BJP ticket. His tenure was marked by significant development work, including:

  • Electrification of 58 villages
  • Establishment of new healthcare facilities
  • Upgradation of schools
  • Road connectivity to 23 previously isolated villages

He also initiated Zomi Nam Ni as a state holiday, underscoring his commitment to cultural identity and tribal recognition.

From his modest childhood to three consecutive terms as MLA and cabinet minister, Valte will be remembered as a banker-turned-leader who brought light and development to the hills of Manipur.
