Vungzagin Valte, a Zomi by descent, succumbed to injuries sustained during a mob attack in Imphal on May 4, 2023. He was receiving treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram at the time of his death. His passing has ignited widespread outrage among local residents, who viewed him as the embodiment of their political aspirations and a champion of their cause.

Thousands Gather for Final Journey

In the early hours of Monday, around 1:25 AM, thousands of people including youths and students assembled along the Manipur-Mizoram border. They waited solemnly as Valte's mortal remains arrived from Lengpui Airport in Aizawl, eager to pay their respects and catch a final glimpse of their leader's coffin.

The procession began with the body being taken to Sinzawl village, where close relatives, villagers, and local authorities offered heartfelt tributes at the community hall. From there, the journey continued toward Thanlon, with villagers and supporters lining the entire route in a show of collective mourning.

Emotional Tributes Across Constituency

Valte's body was transported in a vehicle procession through his constituency, with crowds gathering along roadsides to pay tribute and express their profound grief. The procession traveled along NEC roads to reach the Thanlon sub-divisional headquarters, where a special tribute program was organized at the village chief's residence.

This gathering was attended by people from all communities, with tributes pouring in from the chief's family, village authorities, SDO and staff, tribal leaders, and students. The diversity of mourners underscored Valte's widespread respect across community lines.

Family's Heartfelt Reflections

During an emotional speech at the Thanlon sub-divisional headquarters, Valte's eldest son Gousuan shared poignant details about his father's final journey. He revealed that Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had rushed to Delhi upon learning of Valte's death and offered to airlift the body by chartered flight.

"However, I chose to bring my father home on a commercial flight so that people could pay their respects along the way," Gousuan explained, highlighting the family's commitment to allowing public mourning.

In his address, Gousuan stated, "God gave us a good father, and now he has taken him to heaven. Let us all depend on God." He emphasized that his father's suffering should not be in vain and that Valte's leadership and legacy now belong to the people he served so diligently.

Community Leaders Vow to Honor Legacy

Zomi Council chairman Vumsuan Nauluk attended the tribute program and made a solemn vow. He declared that any harm caused to Zomis, whether resulting in death or injury, would not be in vain, signaling the community's determination to transform tragedy into purposeful action.

Journey to Birthplace and Beyond

Valte's body was subsequently taken to Mualnuam village, his birthplace, where villagers, leaders, and youths paid homage to their native son. The procession is expected to continue to Songtal and Churachandpur via Guite Road, with further tributes planned along the route.

Sources indicate the procession will eventually proceed toward Valte's Dorcaa Veng residence at New Lamka Churachandpur, completing a journey that has become a powerful expression of communal grief and respect.
