MLA Vungzagin Valte's Body Transferred for Autopsy Amidst Political Unrest

The mortal remains of Vungzagin Valte, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator representing the 56-Thanlon assembly constituency, were relocated from his residence in New Lamka, Dorcas Veng, to the Churachandpur District Hospital morgue on Tuesday afternoon. According to family sources, the transfer occurred at approximately 1:30 PM to facilitate a post-mortem examination.

Family Seeks Autopsy Citing Unnatural Death Allegations

A close family member disclosed that the autopsy report is being pursued because Valte's demise is directly connected to injuries he sustained during a violent mob assault on May 4, 2023. The source explicitly alleged that the attack was instigated by the Arambai Tenggol group. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the family representative characterized the case as an "unnatural death" resulting from violence. They have called for a thorough and proper investigative procedure to be conducted by a high-profile agency to ensure justice is served.

Candlelight Vigil Unites Tribal Communities in Demand for Union Territory

In a significant display of solidarity on Wednesday, numerous tribal organizations convened a candlelight vigil at the Churachandpur District Hospital, where Valte's body was being held. The gathering served as a platform to renew and amplify their longstanding demand for the creation of a Union Territory with its own legislature for the region.

The event witnessed substantial participation from members of the Kuki, Zomi, Hmar, and Mizo communities. It was organized by the Zomi Students Federation (ZSF) and saw active involvement from other prominent student bodies, including the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Hmar Students' Association (HSA), Mizo Students' Union (MSU), and various civil society groups.

Passionate slogans such as "no rest till UT is achieved" and "we want justice" resonated throughout the assembly. Speakers at the vigil contended that Valte's tragic death has inadvertently strengthened tribal unity and intensified the collective push for a separate administrative arrangement specifically for the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar-Mizo peoples.

Family and Leaders Vow to Continue Valte's Political Legacy

Gousuan, Valte's eldest son, made an emotional appeal to the public, urging them to persevere with his father's political agenda. "My father's dream should not go in vain," he told the assembled crowd. He recounted that the late MLA had been a consistent and vocal advocate for a Union Territory with legislature, and despite his declining health, had actively sought a meeting with the Prime Minister to formally present this demand.

KSO president Minlal Gangte paid tribute to Valte, describing him as a leader deeply committed to public welfare. "Though he is no longer with us, his ideals must live on until they are fulfilled," Gangte stated, while also urging continued unity among the communities. He expressed support for the family's decision to transport the mortal remains through Mizoram, a route intended to allow constituents from Valte's own constituency to pay their final respects.

Representatives from the Hmar Students' Association asserted that mourning the leader would be incomplete without actively pursuing his political vision. They recalled that Valte had previously written to the Prime Minister seeking intervention, an action that preceded the alleged attack he suffered during violence in Imphal the previous year.

Solidarity and Resolve from Student and Defence Groups

ZSF president Nengzalian extended gratitude to all participants and called for unwavering solidarity. "All the wishes of Valte will be accomplished if we continue to fight together," he emphasized.

The vigil also featured addresses from representatives of various village defence groups, including the Central Village Defence Force (CVDF), Hmar Defence Volunteer Force (HDVF), and Kuki-Zomi Defence Volunteers (KZDV). These representatives declared their readiness to take more proactive steps in support of the movement for a separate administration and sought broader public cooperation to advance their cause.
