Monsoon Arrives in Punjab with Yellow Alert for Heavy Rainfall

The monsoon has officially arrived in Punjab, bringing much-needed respite from the heat. The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for several places in the state over the next three to four days, indicating moderate to heavy rainfall is likely. Experts from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) confirm that the weather will remain cloudy with significant precipitation expected.

In the past 24 hours, Ludhiana recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2°C and a minimum of 29.8°C, which is near normal for this time of the year. Since July 1, the city has received 89.6 mm of rainfall, while the normal rainfall for the entire month of July is 220.4 mm.

Rainfall Predictions for July 6-7

Prof. P.K. Kingra, head of the Meteorological Department at PAU, stated that on Saturday and Sunday there is a possibility of light rain in isolated places. However, on July 6 and 7, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas, particularly in the northeast and central parts of Punjab. A yellow alert has already been issued for these regions.

When asked about the uneven distribution of rainfall across Ludhiana, Kingra explained that monsoon onset variability is common during this season, resulting in rain in some areas while others remain dry.

Farmers Welcome Rain for Paddy Fields

Farmer leader Tarsem Jodhan noted that the rainfall is normal for paddy cultivation and will also improve the power situation. “Earlier, the crop was being affected as regular eight-hour power supply was being hit, but with the rainfall, the demand will fall and farmers will get enough power supply in the fields,” he said.

Residents Relieved from Sultry Weather

Residents across Ludhiana have welcomed the timely arrival of the monsoon, which has provided relief from the dry and sultry conditions. Although the rain has caused some inconveniences due to lack of preparedness by authorities, the overall sentiment is positive as the monsoon brings much-needed cooling after the hot spell.
