The tributes come as the BJP commemorates the death anniversary of its ideological predecessor, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which Mookerjee founded in 1951. Mookerjee served as India's first Minister of Industry and Supply under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru but resigned in 1950 over differences on the Liaquat-Nehru Pact.

Mookerjee's Legacy and Impact

Syama Prasad Mookerjee is remembered for his role in the integration of Jammu and Kashmir, where he advocated for full accession to India. He was arrested in 1953 while entering the state without a permit and died under mysterious circumstances in detention. His death anniversary is observed as Balidan Diwas by the BJP and its affiliates.

According to party sources, events were held across the country to honor Mookerjee's memory, including floral tributes at his statue in New Delhi and discussions on his contributions to India's unity and integrity.
