Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday observed the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency as 'Constitution Murder Day', warning against forces that seek to undermine democratic institutions. In a series of posts on social media, Modi urged citizens to remain vigilant and protect the Constitution from any future attacks.
Modi's Strong Message on Emergency Anniversary
The Prime Minister stated that the imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975, was a dark chapter in India's democratic history, when fundamental rights were suspended and dissent was crushed. He emphasized that the day should serve as a reminder of the fragility of democracy and the need for constant vigilance.
"Today, we remember the darkest day in India's democratic history when the Constitution was murdered. We pledge to never let such a situation arise again," Modi wrote on X. He also called upon the youth to study the events of that period and learn from the mistakes of the past.
Opposition Criticism
The Prime Minister's remarks drew sharp criticism from opposition parties, who accused him of using the Emergency to divert attention from current issues. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Modi's government itself has been undermining democratic institutions. "The Emergency was a tragedy, but the current regime is using similar tactics to silence opposition," Gandhi said in a statement.
However, Modi's supporters argued that the comparison is baseless and that the Prime Minister is merely highlighting the importance of constitutional values.
Historical Context
The Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, citing internal disturbances. It lasted for 21 months, during which civil liberties were suspended, press censorship was imposed, and thousands of political opponents were arrested. The period is widely regarded as one of the most controversial in independent India's history.
In recent years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has used the anniversary to criticize the Congress party and highlight its commitment to democracy. Modi's speech on Friday is part of a broader campaign by the BJP to remind voters of the excesses of the Emergency.
Call for Vigilance
Modi concluded his remarks by urging citizens to be vigilant against any attempts to subvert the Constitution. "Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a way of life. We must always be alert to protect it," he said. The Prime Minister also announced that the government will launch a series of educational programs to spread awareness about the Emergency and the importance of constitutional rights.
