Several parts of Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging in the Andheri subway and other low-lying areas, officials said. The inundation forced authorities to divert traffic in some pockets.
Rainfall Distribution Across Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the eastern suburbs received an average of 109 mm of rain, the western suburbs 87 mm, and the island city 86 mm between 8 am on Tuesday and 8 am on Wednesday. Mankhurd in the eastern suburbs recorded the highest rainfall at 170.4 mm. In the island city, Byculla saw 162.52 mm, Mumbai Central 142.43 mm, and Wadala 127 mm. In the western suburbs, the Bandra Kurla Complex area received 132.4 mm, Borivali 126 mm, and Dindoshi fire station recorded 123 mm.
Impact on Transport
BEST buses operated normally, but suburban train services on the Central Railway and Western Railway faced delays. The Harbour line, connecting Navi Mumbai with parts of Mumbai, was disrupted after an overhead wire snapped between 4.52 am and 5.45 am, affecting local train movement. Water entered the Andheri subway, prompting traffic diversions.
Hourly Rainfall Data
Between 7 am and 8 am on Wednesday, the island city and eastern suburbs experienced light rain with a few heavy spells, while parts of the western suburbs saw heavier showers. The highest rainfall during this hour was in Andheri West (39 mm), followed by Andheri East (34 mm) and Bandra West (24 mm), according to the BMC.
