Union Minister L Murugan Dismisses Vijay's Political Credentials Ahead of PM Modi Rally
Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting L Murugan has asserted that the public perceives Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay primarily as a cinema actor, not as a seasoned political leader. Murugan made these comments on Sunday while overseeing preparations for the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) public meeting, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address at Panjapur in Trichy city on March 11.
Murugan Criticizes Vijay's Political Stance and Freebie Promises
"Vijay once opposed freebies, but he is announcing freebies now. People view cinema actors just as stars. Vijay is not a proven politician; he is just facing his maiden election," Murugan stated emphatically. He drew parallels to other actors who ventured into politics, noting, "Similar gatherings were there for actors Chiranjeevi in Andhra Pradesh, and Vijayakant when they launched political parties. The crowd that gathers for TVK will not convert into votes. It stopped with MGR in Tamil Nadu."
High Expectations for PM Modi's Trichy Rally
The Union minister projected a massive turnout for the Prime Minister's election rally, anticipating at least 7 lakh attendees. He highlighted that a significant portion of the crowd would consist of supporters from BJP allies, including AIADMK, AMMK, and PMK. Murugan emphasized that the NDA is steadily gaining a foothold in the poll-bound state, and Modi's third visit to Tamil Nadu—following earlier rallies in Madurantakam and Madurai—is expected to further bolster support for the alliance.
Response to CM Stalin's Remarks and TMC Protocol Issue
When questioned about Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's statement suggesting that the BJP might oust Edappadi K. Palaniswami from the AIADMK general secretary's post, Murugan dismissed it as a sign of fear. "The CM is making such statements in fear of defeat in the assembly election," he remarked.
Additionally, Murugan addressed the alleged protocol lapse during President Droupadi Murmu's visit to West Bengal, criticizing the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He pointed out that as part of the INDIA bloc, TMC disrespected the President by failing to have the CM or any ministers present to welcome the constitutional head of the country.
Murugan's comments come amid heightened political activity in Tamil Nadu, with the NDA aiming to strengthen its presence ahead of the upcoming elections. The focus remains on whether actor-turned-politician Vijay can translate his popularity into electoral success, a challenge Murugan firmly believes he will struggle to overcome.
