A new statue of former Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraja Urs has been installed at the new Deputy Commissioner's office complex in Mysuru, replacing the earlier one. The statue was sculpted by renowned artist Arun Yogiraj, who gained fame for crafting the Sri Bala Rama idol at the Ayodhya Sri Rama Mandira.
Statue Details and Sculptor
The new statue is carved from Krishna Shile, a type of black granite known for its durability and fine grain, which allows intricate detailing. Arun Yogiraj, a noted sculptor from Mysuru, was commissioned for the work. He previously sculpted the majestic Sri Bala Rama idol installed at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which drew widespread acclaim.
Replacement and Installation
The replacement was carried out as part of the ongoing development of the new DC office complex. The earlier statue was relocated to make way for the new one, which better complements the architectural aesthetics of the complex. The installation took place on June 26, 2026, according to officials.
Devaraja Urs served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1972 to 1977 and 1978 to 1980. He is remembered for his progressive policies, including land reforms and reservations for backward classes. The statue honors his contributions to the state and the region.
Significance of Krishna Shile
Krishna Shile is a traditional stone used in many South Indian sculptures and temples. Its use for the statue ensures longevity and a classic finish, aligning with the cultural heritage of Mysuru. Arun Yogiraj's choice of material and design reflects his mastery in traditional sculpting techniques.
