The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has stepped into the Capgemini creche abuse case in Bengaluru, demanding a detailed police report. The child rights body has initiated a suo motu inquiry into the incident.
Suo Motu Inquiry Initiated
According to a statement from the NCPCR, the commission has taken cognizance of the matter and is seeking a comprehensive report from the Bengaluru police. The case involves allegations of abuse at a creche run by Capgemini, a multinational IT firm, in Bengaluru.
The NCPCR has asked the police to provide details of the complaint, the action taken so far, and the status of the investigation. The commission is also probing whether the creche was operating in compliance with the National Creche Standards and other child safety norms.
Background of the Case
The incident came to light after parents of children enrolled in the creche raised concerns about the treatment of their wards. Reports suggest that several children were allegedly subjected to physical and emotional abuse by the caretakers. The parents approached the local police, who registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Justice Act.
A senior police officer confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that statements from the parents and the creche staff have been recorded. The officer added that the police are examining CCTV footage from the creche to ascertain the facts.
NCPCR's Role and Powers
The NCPCR, established under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, has the authority to inquire into complaints relating to child rights violations. The commission can summon individuals, demand documents, and recommend action to the government or other authorities.
In this case, the NCPCR has warned that strict action will be taken if any lapses are found. The commission has also advised the parents to cooperate with the investigation and has offered counseling services for the affected children.
Reactions from Parents and Activists
Parents of the children have expressed relief at the NCPCR's intervention. One parent said, "We are glad that the national body is looking into the matter. We hope that justice is served and that such incidents do not happen again." Child rights activists have also lauded the move, calling for stricter regulation of creches in corporate establishments.
The case highlights the need for robust child protection mechanisms in workplace creches, which are becoming increasingly common in India's IT hubs.
