Rajya Sabha Debate: Opposition and BJP Clash Over Union Budget 2026

Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a heated discussion on the Union Budget, with Opposition members sharply criticizing its provisions, while the BJP defended it as a visionary roadmap for India's future. The debate highlighted key issues such as farmer welfare, unemployment, and tax refunds, reflecting deep political divides.

Opposition Raises Concerns Over Farmers and Unemployment

Opposition MPs from various parties voiced strong objections to the Budget, arguing that it fails to address critical needs. IUML MP Haris Beeran from Kerala questioned the Finance Minister about delayed tax refunds for honest taxpayers, stating, "I want to ask the honourable Minister how much refund of tax is held up..." He further lamented that the Budget includes substantial schemes for industrialists but nothing for farmers, emphasizing a perceived neglect of agricultural communities.

Other Opposition leaders echoed similar sentiments. H D Deve Gowda of the JD(S) stressed that growth alone is insufficient, calling for employment to be central to policy thinking. He remarked, "We must ask ourselves honestly are we measuring success only by investment announcements or by dignified jobs created for our youth, especially in smaller towns and rural India..." He urged stronger focus on urban governance, water security, climate resilience, and regional balance.

TMC member Saket Gokhale criticized the Budget as personality-oriented rather than policy-oriented, claiming it offers nothing for the country's youth. Congress MP Rajeev Shukla raised concerns about recent trade deals, arguing they are tilted towards America and not beneficial for India.

BJP Defends Budget as Strategic and Forward-Looking

In contrast, BJP members praised the Budget for its strategic vision and positive impacts. Sujeet Kumar highlighted the increase in the defence budget as a sign of the government's commitment to national security. He also welcomed announcements such as the establishment of university townships and girls' hostels, viewing them as steps toward educational and social development.

BJP MP Kavita Patidar described the Budget as a roadmap for the future, asserting that India stands strong amid global chaos. She pointed to recent trade deals as evidence of the country's growing respect and strength on the international stage.

Key Points of Contention

  • Tax Refunds: Haris Beeran's query on delayed refunds for honest taxpayers.
  • Farmer Support: Opposition claims of no specific schemes for farmers in the Budget.
  • Unemployment: Criticisms over insufficient measures to tackle job creation.
  • Trade Deals: Debates on whether recent agreements favor the U.S. over India.
  • Defence and Education: BJP's emphasis on increased defence spending and educational initiatives.

The Rajya Sabha session underscored ongoing political tensions, with the Budget serving as a focal point for broader discussions on economic priorities and social welfare. As the debate continues, these issues are likely to shape future policy discussions and electoral narratives.
