Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly refuted media reports suggesting that the central government was considering imposing a cess, tax, or surcharge on foreign travel to manage the fiscal impact of ongoing conflict-linked economic pressures. In a post on X, PM Modi categorically stated that there was “not an iota of truth” in such claims and clarified that the government has no plans to restrict foreign travel.
Government's Commitment to Ease of Living
The Prime Minister further emphasized that the Centre remains committed to improving ease of doing business and ease of living for citizens. He reassured the public that no such levy is under consideration.
Origin of the False Report
The clarification came after a media report claimed that discussions were taking place at the “highest levels” regarding a temporary levy on foreign travel. The report attributed this to rising crude oil prices and import costs amid the ongoing war situation. However, the media outlet later withdrew the report, issuing an apology on X and admitting that the story was inaccurate.
The swift denial from the Prime Minister's office underscores the government's stance on not burdening citizens with additional taxes during challenging times. The incident also highlights the importance of verifying information before publication.
