Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the alleged misappropriation of funds collected for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Kharge questions silence on alleged fund theft
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Kharge said, "Modi performed the Pran Pratishtha and inaugurated the temple, but when there is alleged misappropriation of funds, he is silent. How do you know the money didn't go to him?" He demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and accused the BJP-led governments of diverting public donations.
The Congress leader's remarks come amid reports of irregularities in the collection and use of funds for the temple, which has been a flagship project of the Modi government. The temple trust, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, has denied any wrongdoing, but opposition parties have called for a probe.
Political fallout and reactions
Kharge's statement has sparked a political row, with the BJP accusing him of disrespecting the temple and the sentiments of millions of Hindus. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Kharge is making baseless allegations to divert attention from the Congress's own corruption scandals."
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has not issued an official response. The Ram Mandir construction, estimated to cost over Rs 1,800 crore, has been funded through public donations and government allocations. The temple was inaugurated in January 2024, with the Pran Pratishtha ceremony performed by Modi.
Demand for transparency
Kharge also called for a detailed audit of all funds collected for the temple, saying, "The public has the right to know how their money was used. If there is no theft, why is the government afraid of an audit?" He reiterated that the Congress party would raise the issue in Parliament.
The controversy adds to the ongoing political tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, with the 2026 state elections in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh drawing near.
