Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Denounces Assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra issued a strong statement on Sunday, labeling the targeted assassination of the leadership of a sovereign nation as "despicable" and deserving of "strong condemnation." She directed her criticism at what she called "the so-called leaders of the democratic world," whom she accused of orchestrating the murder of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Modi Government's Response Termed a "Betrayal"
In her remarks, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took aim at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he was "genuflecting before the Israel PM and US President." The Congress party has characterized the Modi government's response to the war on Iran and its silence on Khamenei's killing as a "betrayal of India's values, principles and interests." She emphasized that the country is paying a hefty price for both the substance and style of PM Modi's foreign policy approach.
Call for Peace Amid Escalating Conflict
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the situation as "tragic," noting that multiple nations have been dragged into the conflict. "The world needs peace, not more unnecessary wars," she asserted, invoking Mahatma Gandhi's famous words: "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Her comments come amid reports of escalating violence, including Israel attacks on Iran, US-Israel strikes resulting in casualties, and explosions in Gulf cities like Dubai, Doha, and Manama, with airports being targeted.
Congress Spokesperson Criticizes Modi's Israel Visit
Adding to the criticism, Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh pointed to Prime Minister Modi's visit to Israel on February 25-26, a time when the world was aware that US-Israel forces were poised to attack Iran. Ramesh labeled Modi's speech in the Knesset as a "display of shameful moral cowardice." He further accused Modi of failures in foreign policy, highlighting that former US President Donald Trump continues to engage with Pakistan by applauding General Asim Munir, whose remarks are linked to the Pahalgam terror attack backdrop.
Ramesh also noted that Trump has repeatedly claimed to have halted Operation Sindoor and that the US is supporting Pakistan's war efforts in Afghanistan. These allegations underscore the Congress party's broader critique of the current administration's international stance, framing it as detrimental to India's strategic interests and global peace efforts.
