Bathinda: In a significant political development less than two weeks before the May 26 civic body elections in Punjab, former Faridkot municipal council president Narinderpal Singh Ninda left the Congress party to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday.
Ninda Welcomed into AAP
Ninda, accompanied by several district-level functionaries, was officially welcomed into the party fold by AAP Faridkot MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon. He is widely expected to contest as the party's candidate in the upcoming municipal council elections. The deadline for filing nomination papers for the 105 municipal bodies, which include eight municipal corporations, is May 16. Notably, four of these corporations are located in the Malwa region.
Counter-Move: Former Moga Mayor Joins Congress
In a parallel shift, former Moga mayor Baljit Singh Chani left AAP to rejoin the Congress party. He was welcomed by Malvika Sood, sister of actor Sonu Sood. Chani's decision follows his resignation as mayor after being suspended from AAP on November 27, 2025, on charges of alleged misconduct.
These cross-party movements highlight the intense political maneuvering ahead of the local body elections in Punjab, with both major parties seeking to strengthen their positions.
