Punjab Chief Minister Calls for Urgent Evacuation of Nationals from Middle East Conflict Zone
In a critical development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has issued a high-level appeal to the central government, urging the immediate launch of an emergency evacuation mission. This mission aims to rescue thousands of Punjabi nationals who are currently trapped in the escalating conflict across the Middle East. The call comes amid heightened tensions in the region, including recent attacks and military actions involving Israel, Iran, and the United States.
High-Level Telephonic Appeal to Civil Aviation Minister
On Thursday, Chief Minister Mann made a telephonic appeal to Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, demanding the deployment of "special aircraft carriers" for the repatriation of workers and students caught in the crossfire of the sudden regional war. Mann confirmed that comprehensive data, including contact details and precise locations of the stranded individuals, has been shared with the Union ministry to facilitate a coordinated rescue effort.
Mann stated, "The safe return of our Punjabis stranded in Arab countries is our government's topmost priority. I have urged the Union minister that these individuals must be evacuated at the earliest so they can reunite with their distressed families." To expedite the process, Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh has been dispatched to New Delhi for a face-to-face meeting with central officials to finalise the logistics of the extraction.
Central Government Assurances and Historical Context
Following the discussion, the Union minister reportedly assured the Punjab government that necessary arrangements, including the deployment of special flights, were being organised. The Chief Minister's office highlighted the historical contribution of the Punjabi diaspora to emphasise the urgency of the mission. Mann noted the significant role of Punjabis in making India self-reliant and cited their service in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty as a key reason for the Centre to prioritise their rescue.
The state government expressed "firm solidarity" with the families of youths and students stuck in the Gulf region. Mann declared, "We are duty-bound to bail out our people in this hour of crisis. The Punjab government stands firmly with the aggrieved families until every citizen is back on native land."
Background on the Middle East Conflict
The evacuation appeal comes against the backdrop of a rapidly intensifying conflict in the Middle East. Recent developments include:
- Israel launching attacks on Iran, with live updates indicating ongoing military engagements.
- Iran responding with a 'massive missile' strike at a US airbase in Bahrain.
- Israel conducting bombings in Beirut, further escalating regional tensions.
- Satellite images revealing the aftermath of strikes on Iranian sites, including Khamenei's compound and nuclear complexes.
- Operation Epic Fury, where the US reportedly spent $700 million in 24 hours, with the final war cost remaining uncertain.
This volatile situation has left many foreign nationals, including those from Punjab, in a precarious position, necessitating urgent evacuation efforts to ensure their safety and well-being.
