Punjab Legislative Council Meeting Highlights Expansion Plans
At a meeting of the Punjab Legislative Council held in Simla on June 26, Sardar Jogendra Singh, Minister of Agriculture, unveiled a comprehensive five-year programme aimed at expanding both agriculture and industries across the province. His speech reflected enthusiasm and a commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the people while enhancing his own credibility.
Model Farms to Demonstrate Intensive Agriculture
In the agricultural sector, Singh announced plans to establish model farms in every district and tehsil of Punjab. These farms are designed to showcase the advantages of intensive agriculture to local farmers. Noting that the average landholding in Punjab ranges from four to seven acres, the department aims to demonstrate what can be achieved on such a plot. Previous large-scale demonstration farms had limited educational impact, as farmers struggled to adopt modern methods due to factors such as lack of capital, technical knowledge, or patience.
The new approach involves running experimental demonstration farms that match the size of the average Punjabi holding. By adopting improved processes, farmers can increase crop yields and profits. If successful, the department will earn the gratitude of the people. During the current year, such farms will be opened in nine districts, with plans to extend them to all districts and tehsils over time.
Industrial Development Component
Beyond agriculture, the five-year programme also includes industrial expansion, though specific details were not elaborated in the meeting. The minister's comprehensive vision aims to boost the provincial economy through simultaneous growth in both sectors.
According to Sardar Jogendra Singh, the initiative is expected to bring real benefits to the populace and mark a significant step forward for Punjab's development.
