Punjab Chief Minister Announces Major Salary Hike for Sarpanches
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday declared that all sarpanches in Punjab will receive a monthly salary of Rs 10,000 starting from August 15. The announcement was made via a Facebook post, outlining the state government's commitment to strengthening grassroots democracy and recognizing the vital role of village heads.
In his post, Mann emphasized the importance of the panchayat as the first tier of democracy. He stated, "Sarpanches work day and night for the development and welfare of their villages and deserve a salary for their efforts." The move is intended to enable sarpanches to support their families better while enhancing their effectiveness in driving village development.
Background and Previous Honorarium
This significant increase follows a previous enhancement on April 24 last year, on 'Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Diwas', when the state government raised the honorarium of sarpanches from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per month. The latest decision marks a fivefold increase from the earlier revised amount.
The announcement comes amid a series of 'Sarpanch Milni' programmes being held by the Chief Minister in Bathinda district over the past two days. These events aim to foster direct interaction with elected village representatives and discuss rural development issues, underscoring the government's focus on local governance.
Impact on Rural Development and Family Support
Mann stressed that the salary hike would empower sarpanches to contribute more effectively to village progress. He posted, "If villages progress, Punjab will progress." The financial support is expected to allow sarpanches to dedicate more time and resources to community welfare without personal financial strain.
The decision has been widely welcomed as a step towards recognizing the grassroots leadership that plays a crucial role in implementing government schemes and addressing local challenges. By providing a stable income, the government hopes to attract more dedicated individuals to contest panchayat elections and serve their communities.
Government's Vision for Decentralized Governance
The Chief Minister's announcement aligns with the state's broader vision of strengthening democratic institutions at the village level. The increased salary is part of a series of measures aimed at empowering local bodies and ensuring efficient delivery of services. Mann reiterated the government's commitment to supporting panchayati raj institutions as engines of rural transformation.
The new salary structure will come into effect from Independence Day, August 15, symbolizing the government's dedication to grassroots democracy and the welfare of village-level functionaries.
