The process to select the new president of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) has officially begun following the declaration of election results. The announcement of the new PYC president will be made by the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) after conducting interviews with the top three performing candidates. Until the final announcement, Mohit Mohindra will continue to hold the charge as the current president.
Election Results and Key Candidates
Shubham Devgun emerged as the frontrunner in the PYC elections, securing 1,60,154 votes. He defeated his nearest rival, Gagandeep Jalalpur, who polled 1,56,271 votes, by a margin of nearly 4,000 votes. Jalalpur is the son of former MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur and was backed by the group led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The candidate who finished third, Karamvir Dhillon, secured 94,181 votes. Dhillon was supported by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa and former MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu.
Political Support and Factional Dynamics
Party sources indicated that Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amarinder Raja Warring and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa supported Shubham Devgun's candidacy. The election process, which began last year, highlighted a tug of war between two major factions within the Punjab Congress: one led by the PPCC chief and the other by the former Chief Minister. Shuvam Sharma currently serves as the general secretary of the Youth Congress.
Next Steps in the Selection Process
The IYC will now interview the top three vote-getters before making a final decision on the new PYC president. This selection comes ahead of the anticipated recast of the PPCC. The outcome will shape the leadership of the youth wing in Punjab, a key demographic for the Congress party in the state.
