Rahul Gandhi has formally expressed dissent over the selection process for the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the exercise was biased and lacked transparency. The Congress leader stated that he could not abdicate his constitutional responsibility and emphasized that the Leader of Opposition is not a rubber stamp for government decisions.
Allegations of Bias and Lack of Transparency
In his letter, Gandhi alleged that he was not provided with key documents required for a proper evaluation of candidates, including self-appraisal reports and 360-degree assessments. He argued that without these documents, it was impossible to make an informed and objective decision. Gandhi further stated that the entire process appeared pre-decided, reducing the selection committee to a mere formality.
Meeting at Prime Minister's Residence
The meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister's residence, was also attended by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. During the meeting, Gandhi reportedly submitted a formal note of dissent, highlighting his concerns over the selection procedure. He maintained that the process undermined the credibility of the selection committee and the institution of the CBI.
Gandhi's dissent note underscores the ongoing political tensions surrounding key appointments in investigative agencies. The selection of the CBI Director is a critical decision, given the agency's role in probing high-profile cases. The opposition has repeatedly raised concerns about the independence of such appointments under the current government.
This development comes amid broader debates about transparency and fairness in the appointment process for top bureaucratic and investigative positions. Gandhi's move is seen as a strong assertion of the Leader of Opposition's role in ensuring checks and balances in such decisions.
