Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, laid the foundation stone for a major infrastructure project worth Rs 16,000 crore in Puttaparthi. The project is dedicated to the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) fighter jet programme, marking a significant step towards India's self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The AMCA infrastructure project is part of the Indian government's efforts to boost indigenous aerospace capabilities. It will include state-of-the-art facilities for design, development, and testing of the fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and enhance the region's industrial ecosystem.
Rajnath Singh emphasized that the AMCA programme is crucial for the Indian Air Force's modernization. He highlighted that the project aligns with the 'Make in India' initiative and will reduce dependence on foreign defence equipment.
Economic and Strategic Impact
The Rs 16,000 crore investment is anticipated to accelerate the AMCA development timeline. The facility will house advanced manufacturing units, research laboratories, and testing infrastructure. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister stated that the project will transform Puttaparthi into a defence manufacturing hub.
The AMCA is a twin-engine, all-weather stealth fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). It aims to replace the ageing fleet of MiG-29s and Jaguars in the IAF. The project has received approval from the Defence Acquisition Council and is being developed with technology from various Indian and international partners.
This foundation-laying ceremony underscores the government's commitment to achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first prototype rollout targeted by 2028.
